MEMOIRUMENTARY PERSONAL PROJECTS
Memoirumentary takes forever. A kind of constant companion that niggles and nags and maybe never really comes together. Here are some ones that have come together. Almost. There are a handful more I’m slowly editing my way through.
MEXICO CITY NARANJA ROJA AZUL
A very much work-in-progress edit from a recent walkabout in CDMX. Memoirumentary feels more like a process than a genre, really. And so it is here: a little over four minutes at the moment, this will eventually turn into a more fulsome short film. Sooner than later, I’m sure. The wonderful track from one of the most interesting and curious artists, Juana Molina.
FOGO ISLAND INN BORN TO GO FISHING
On vacation in Newfoundland, I was introduced to the fisherman, teacher and poet Roy Dwyer. Having the time on my hands, and both an iPhone and DSLR handy, I recorded Roy reading of a number of poems in his tool shed. I made one poem, "Born To Go Fishing," into a short film.
YURI SHIMOJO ARTIST PORTRAITS
SUMI & SHU
I curated a solo show in 2016 for Yuri Shimojo at the Picture Farm Gallery and spent a morning shooting an intimate, biographical portrait of the artist. The resulting (full) interview was then transcribed and printed in the show’s companion catalogue.
PORT ELIOT FESTIVAL TWO NIGHTS IN CORNWALL
Taking a break after filming in London, I joined some friends at an infamous literary festival in St. Germans, Cornwall. I spent a weekend documenting the scenes and sounds of an English Summer idiom, later making my experience into a short, visceral sort of document.
PF GALLERY ARTIST PORTRAITS
From 2014 to 2016, when I moonlighting as an art gallery curator in Williamsburg, I would sometimes show up at artist’s spaces or when they were hanging their work for their show at the space and make impromptu portrait films with my iPhone. A few examples.
